1. Check the NYC home improvement license
In New York City, contractors who do home improvement work must be licensed by the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP). Ask for the license number and look it up on the DCWP website, or call 311. Our license number is #2106387-DCA.
2. Ask for proof of insurance
A contractor should carry general liability insurance and workers’ compensation for their crew. Ask for certificates of insurance before work starts.
3. Get a written contract
Never start a job on a handshake. The contract should list the full scope of work, materials, price, payment schedule and start and completion dates.
4. Do not pay too much up front
Be cautious of anyone who wants most of the money before work begins. Payments should follow the progress of the job.
5. Ask who pulls the permits
Work such as sidewalk replacement, structural repairs and some facade work needs permits from NYC DOT or the Department of Buildings. A good contractor knows which permits the job needs and handles them.
6. Read real reviews
Check Google reviews and ask for recent jobs near you. A contractor proud of their work will be happy to show it.
7. Get a clear, itemized estimate
A good estimate explains what will be done and why, so you can compare contractors fairly. Be wary of very low bids with vague descriptions.
